Sam Jacobs, writer for the national foodie guide Eating Everywhere, stopped by Green Kitchen recently to check out some of our dishes. It looks as though we may have converted another patron to our healthy dishes…and our vegan cupcakes! Take a look below and check out the official link to the review as well.
From Eating Everywhere:
I don’t like health food. Aside from the mental image of boring, tasteless entrees, tiny portions, and vegetable overloads the fact that I know that I can eat whatever I please, but in smaller portions coupled with exercise makes me wonder, “why bother?” The fact of the matter is though that most of us who say we’ll slash our portions and work out 6 days a week end up leaving 4 fries at the bottom of the greasy bag, hitting the gym Monday morning and Saturday afternoon, and mixing in a good portion of alcohol. So healthier restaurants do become necessary, and some like Green Kitchen Cafe in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn even taste pretty good!
Lunch counter / juice bar / cafe / grill establishments like Green Kitchen seem to be growing in popularity, and with good reason. Our nation’s determination to slim down while not sacrificing flavor is forcing restaurateurs to be more creative, and make things taste good. Another such place, Nature’s Grill with two Brooklyn locations in Bay Ridge and Cobble Hill near me offer a similar dining experience, but fall short in the flavor department. I always feel nourished after eating there, but never quite satisfied.
For my meal at Green Kitchen I started with a Maui Mawi smoothie – a thick, healthy shake made with strawberries, coconut milk, banana, & pineapple juice. I normally drink these sorts of drinks after a workout with a scoop of protein, but this was pretty good. I came with an appetite, so it was suggested that I order a burger, the bison burger in particular. I like bison burgers, and this one held up against its diner brethren. It comes on a hearty, multigrain roll with a side of mescalin greens. I added a slice of cheddar, and smeared on some Dijon mustard. It was really good, and wasn’t lacking that “flavor” that so many healthy options tend to be missing.
My dinner companion ordered herself the Aurora juice – a mix of apple, grapefruit, & pear, and the strawberry mozzarella salad. She seemed to be enjoying the salad, but wasn’t too hungry, so she wrapped it to take it home. Normally I’d consider finishing other people’s meals, but my burger was quite filling.

We also shared dessert – a plate of three vegan cupcakes. I know what you’re thinking, “really Sam? Vegan?” Yes! These three little fellas were delicious, moist, and sweet, but not too sweet. There was a good mix of fruit flavors, and chocolate, and mint. Though skeptical at first, my dinner companion had no trouble finishing her share of the cupcakes.

If you’re in Park Slope around the 9th Street area, and you have a hankering for some healthy, decently priced, and delicious food I highly recommend checking out Green Kitchen. I will surely be back myself.
